Star Crusader Tides of War eBook Michael G Thomas Reviews

  • Star Crusader Tides of War by Michael G. Thomas continues this expansive series for the author. The action starts right away at the beginning of the book with an enemy invasion and wars, both the real and virtual world kind. There is also a parallel universe inhabited by video game players, and political overtones that may pique your interest. There is plenty going on in this story, and you can tell the author enjoys creating vivid scenes while developing realistic characters. A fast pace, solid plot, and skillful writing make this a must read for science fiction fans everywhere. It might be helpful to read the other books in the series to get a feel for the author's intent, but this book certainly holds it's own. Overall a solid entry into the science fiction genre that will appeal to teenagers and adults as well. Highly recommend for a fun and entertaining book.
  • This is the latest in a series, Tides of Hope brings us to the Edge of The Rim, which is home to a variety of different alien Lifeforms. Think of the recent movie A City of a thousand planets and you have the idea of the alien diversity within the Rim. The invasion of the Centauri Rim has begun, and the Knighthawks squadron are at the foremost tip of the forces.
At the beginning of each chapter, the author gives us a background and viewpoint of different historical events that have happened that help set the stage for what is going on in this book. Being the tenth in a series, it had the potential to fall flat and become redundant. The overall arc of the book however, is still going strong within the series and the events were easy to immerse myself within and get lost in the adventure of the story. Fantastic series!
  • Star Crusader is a sci-fi thriller about the Centauri Rim and the battles it faces. The Rim is home to many types of misfits and more. There is a stronghold somewhere within the rim that will be the site if the final battle for supreme control. This story falls right in line with the last one in this series and is written in a way that is very easy to follow and there are plenty of reasons to hope your favorite survive. I found this story to be a quick paced action filled journey through fantasy and reality. I think it is just read forneveyone with a desire to explore the sci-fi world where legends are made.
  • The author drops you into the middle of story thats pretty obviously (to me anyway) supposed to mirror some of the current events in our current society. The premise that the political thinking of a world is manipulated through a video game to be ultra nationalistic and xenophobic towards alien races which is a thinly veiled comparison to the modern political realities is weak. Its also a shame to see these types of politics blattantly manifested in a set of books I very much enjoyed up to this point. Maybe the author is looking to get picked up by Tor publishing.
  • Great addition to the series and the writers universe. Following nate and his friends on an ever expanding journey .Nice twist with the "parallel" gamers universe and impact on the real world, kinda wishing gaming on that level was available today -) Since im not from states i happily dont have an opinoin on the political parallels ;-)
  • Great Action as always Heroes from the previous generation join with the heroes of present generation both fighting a war no one saw coming using unique skills, tech, planning, courage & luck.
  • Very surprised turn of events in this book. A worthy continuation of an incredible series. I cannot wait for the next chapter
  • Love the story and how it ties into the previous stories.

The Orphan Tale A Novel eBook Pam Jenoff Reviews

  • I just finished this book, and as I wipe away my tears I have to tell you that this is an original, riveting story about courage, love, friendship, and family. A while back, someone asked if there were too many books written about WWII, and my answer was no....there are millions of stories to tell. The Orphan's Tale is a great example of this, telling a story about events and acts of bravery that I knew nothing about. In this masterful tale, Astrid is an aerialist whose family had owned a circus in Germany; but her family was Jewish, and had disappeared when she returned home after being cast aside by her husband, a German officer. Noa is a young girl whose single act of bravery leads her to the circus, an uncommon but welcome refuge for her. This story is told with such passion and enormous heart, with pulse-pounding suspense as Astrid, Noa, and the rest of their circus friends are under constant threat of the Nazis. I highly recommend this book to all book lovers; it is sure to enthrall everyone.
  • I go through several books a week. As soon as I finish one, I am ready with the next. The Orphan's Tale made me stop, wait, think and want to absorb it before I went on to the next book. I'll admit I am interested in books about WWII and oddly, about historic circus life. This was a fascinating blend of the two, so I was in heaven! This is a book I wish I'd written...the writing, the plot, the characters...I didn't want it to end. Do yourself a favor and read this one.
  • Based on the glowing reviews, I read this novel as I am a fan of WW II historical fiction. The story managed to capture me but by no means would I call it riveting or written with deep emotion. It's all fairly tenable how the relations come about, how Noa meets Astrid, the circus being the catalyst. Other charcters (Luc, Herr Neuhoff, Gerda, Emmet) play roles that help the story and the conclusion (no spoilers) does account for the fate of all the characters. That all said, I found the writing choppy, lacking a deep felt emotion of the characters (even the main ones) and thought the second half was a bit over-romanticized. Would I recommend it? Yes. Many may find a stronger emotional connection. I did not. So 3 stars for what I thought might be a 4.5 - 5 star going in.
  • When you think about WW II you think of all the people that were taken by the Nazi's because of their different believes, like Gypsies and a lot more. Never thought too much about what happened to the circus people. This book is giving you an inside of what happened during the war with the circus performers and that a lot of Jews were saved by performing at the circus. This was the case of Noa, a 16th year old girl from the Netherlands who was raped by a German soldier and got pregnant by him. As soon as the baby was born the Nazi's took the child away from her. She was thrown out of her parent's home and ended up at the circus where she found a little Jewish boy laying in a box car still alive. She took it with her and while living in the circus train she met Astrid who taught her how to be a aerialist (trapeze worker). First the women do not get along but over time a friendship starts to form and they help each other any way they can and take care of the little Jewish boy named Theo. Noa becomes friends with the circus people and many things happen during the time that she is with the circus. Unfortunately the head of the circus dies and there is hardly any money left to keep all the performers with the circus -which was kept a secret from the performers-. Towards the end of the book dramatic things are starting to happen and all you can do is hope and pray for a good outcome. I could not put this book down because it was for me very interesting and I felt so sorry for Noa that I shed several tears for her. This is a very good book to read and I recommend it to anyone.
  • I would like to thank the Publishers, HarperCollins, Mira, and Harlequin Enterprises Limited, as well as Pam Jenoff for the Advanced Reader’s Edition of “The Orphan’s Tale” by Pam Jenoff.
This has to be one of my favorite Pam Jenoff’s novels. The historical fiction novel takes place during World War Two, and the Holocaust. This is a turbulent and devastating period in history. Pam Jenoff’s description of the isolation and depravity of the towns and villages as well as the attitudes of people during this time period is extraordinary and exceptional.
The author has been so ambitious in weaving her tale, there is so much to absorb. One of the main characters, Noa,gets pregnant by a German soldier, and is forced to give up her baby. Noa’s family is intolerant and throws her out, where she is forced to clean near a railway station. Noa discovers a railroad car filled with Jewish babies, some alive, destined to a concentration camp, and decides to take one of the babies. She names him Theo, and is forced to escape in the ice and cold with no papers.
Noa winds up in a German Circus. The owner of the Circus, has tried to provide safety for Jewish people, and offers Noa a job.
At this time Noa meets Astrid, an acrobat in this circus. Astrid is Jewish, and was part of a Jewish Circus. Astrid is instructed to teach Noa how to do acrobatics. The two of them have a conflicted friendship based on a lack of trust and a need for survival. Astrid does not know where her family is, and is divorced.
We do meet a number of complex characters.
In my opinion, Pam Jenoff compares the indifference and immorality of people with courageous, caring people who offer hope, faith and love, and are willing to take risks.
Kudos to Pam Jenoff for telling an amazing story, and bringing a different perspective to light. I am left with so many provoking thoughts and questions. I highly recommend “The Orphan’s Tale as a wonderful novel of historical fiction genre.

Under the Big Black Sun explores the nascent Los Angeles punk rock movement and its evolution to hardcore punk as it's never been told before. Authors John Doe and Tom DeSavia have woven together an enthralling story of the legendary West Coast scene from 1977 to 1982 by enlisting the voices of people who were there. The book shares chapter-length tales from the authors along with personal essays from famous (and infamous) players in the scene. Additional authors include Exene Cervenka (X), Henry Rollins (Black Flag), Mike Watt (The Minutemen), Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey (The Go-Go's), Dave Alvin (The Blasters), Chris D. (Flesh Eaters), Jack Grisham (T.S.O.L.), Teresa Covarrubias (The Brat), and Robert Lopez (The Zeros, El Vez) as well as scenesters and journalists Pleasant Gehman, Kristine McKenna, and Chris Morris. Through interstitial commentary, John Doe "narrates" this journey through the land of film noir sunshine, Hollywood back alleys, and suburban sprawl - the place where he met his artistic counterparts, Exene, DJ Bonebrake, and Billy Zoom - and formed X, the band that became synonymous with and in many ways defined L.A. punk.

Under the Big Black Sun shares stories of friendship and love, ambition and feuds, grandiose dreams and cultural rage, all combined with the tattered, glossy sheen of pop culture weirdness that epitomized the operations of Hollywood's underbelly. Listeners will travel to the clubs that defined the scene as well as to the street corners, empty lots, apartment complexes, and squats that served as de facto salons for the musicians, artists, and fringe players that hashed out what would become punk rock in Los Angeles.

"If you are wanting to see the more realistic side of what a young rock band goes through on their climb to the top, this book is a great read. Written by some of the most interesting musical artists from the west coast music scene this series of essays helps paint a wonderfully grimy and often insightful developing music scene. Fun, evocative and often hilarious, this book lets us peek back into our youth and see the music we loved with new eyes. Includes an essay by the great Dave Alvin, (A personal favorite of mine) that lets you know that fitting in and being cool seemed just as alien to the people on stage as it was to the people in the audience. Fun, wild and just great to read. thanks John Doe for putting this together."

Under the Big Black Sun A Personal History of LA Punk Audible Audio Edition John Doe Tom Desavia Exene Cervenka Henry Rollins full cast Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • Full disclosure I'm a lifelong X fan. Good, now we've got that out of the way. I purchased both the edition and the audio book CD. Having been on the fringes of the L.A. punk scene since '82, I've always imagined what I'd missed by not diving in head-first into the scene. Now I know. And I can add more to my "look what you missed" file.

Who better to narrate the world of underappreciated L.A. rock than John Doe? In my opinion, X (John Doe, Exene Cervenka, DJ Bonebrake, Billy Zoom) still haven't received the appropriate amount of accolades they deserve. John Doe and company (Jane Weidlin, Henry Rollins, Exene and many others) provide a unique perspective on a genre only they could comment on. They lived it. And I'm damn glad they lived to tell the tell (so many others did not). This isn't sentimentality, it's remembrances from first-hand participants. The wonderful thing about it all? They were each other's fans. It's gratifying to know that I'm in such good company. Even from the fringes of the fringes. Thank you, John!
  • It's hard to be truly objective about this book, since I was a part (though peripherally in a less-popular sub-scene) of its contents. But still, I very much enjoyed the different voices and perspectives of (very) good friends, people that I knew, had perhaps met, or had only heard about, and their take on a time that now seems like a curious dream to me.

John Doe's between-chapter stories paint him as a Rod Serling-like observer and commentator, though unlike Mr. Serling, John and Exene and their merry crew were integral actors in the stories he and the contributors write about. Their recollections are true to the time and spirit of that era, and bring to life a cultural and musical moment that, though it shone brightly (or darkly, depending on your point of view), lasted too briefly before splintering and adsorbing into the larger cultural and musical fundament.

I read it all in one sitting and felt at once nostalgic and melancholy.

    It's very good.
  • I have both the book and the audiobook, and can say the audiobook is fantastic! All the different chapter authors reading their own sections and recounting their times in this great era. Highly recommended!
  • It is well worth the extra $ to get the audio version of this book.
It's very cool, and very interesting, to hear the actual voices of people talking about that time. It covers, mostly, the first wave of LA punk in the mid-to-late 1970s, ending around 1982. This is the pre-hardcore days, of joyful shared experimentation, and a wide variety of music types. There's a lot of nostalgia for a scene that ended. But it is a story told well, and will take many of you back, whether you were there or not.
The only downside is the repetition of long lists of the bands that dominated the scene then -- the names are important, but once you've heard one long list of the bands of that specific era and specific place, the third, fourth, etc., can be a bit grating. It's the kind of thing one would skip in the print version.
But that's a pretty small criticism of what is definitely a great production.
  • If you are wanting to see the more realistic side of what a young rock band goes through on their climb to the top, this book is a great read. Written by some of the most interesting musical artists from the west coast music scene this series of essays helps paint a wonderfully grimy and often insightful developing music scene. Fun, wild and just great to read. thanks John Doe for putting this together.
  • Very interesting accounts of the LA Punk scene of the late 70's and early 80's by a variety of people. Not all of the individual sections are great (one chapter wastes parts of 6 pages with complete song lyrics that are easily found on the internet), but my favorite is chapter 22, Dave Alvin's "No Slow Songs Tonight 1979-1982," which starts and ends with a very interesting anecdote that makes it a complete narrative.

Definitely worth a read, esp. if you lived through and enjoy the great music of that era.
