“Every C++ professional needs a copy of Effective C++. It is an absolute must-read for anyone thinking of doing serious C++ development. If you’ve never read Effective C++ and you think you know everything about C++, think again.”
Steve Schirripa, Software Engineer, Google
“C++ and the C++ community have grown up in the last fifteen years, and the third edition of Effective C++ reflects this. The clear and precise style of the book is evidence of Scott’s deep insight and distinctive ability to impart knowledge.”
Gerhard Kreuzer, Research and Development Engineer, Siemens AG

The first two editions of Effective C++ were embraced by hundreds of thousands of programmers worldwide. The reason is clear Scott Meyers’ practical approach to C++ describes the rules of thumb used by the experts — the things they almost always do or almost always avoid doing — to produce clear, correct, efficient code.

The book is organized around 55 specific guidelines, each of which describes a way to write better C++. Each is backed by concrete examples. For this third edition, more than half the content is new, including added chapters on managing resources and using templates. Topics from the second edition have been extensively revised to reflect modern design considerations, including exceptions, design patterns, and multithreading.

Important features of Effective C++ include

  • Expert guidance on the design of effective classes, functions, templates, and inheritance hierarchies.
  • Applications of new “TR1” standard library functionality, along with comparisons to existing standard library components.
  • Insights into differences between C++ and other languages (e.g., Java, C#, C) that help developers from those languages assimilate “the C++ way” of doing things.

PDF Effective C++ 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs 3rd Edition Scott Meyers Books

"This book is a really great book. However, I make one observation before I recommend you reading this. You must have attempted or completed at least one very large c++ program. You must be familiar with various design patterns. Have attempted to use said design patters at least one or twice.

C/C++ to me is about your progression in learning the language. Most people start out small begin learning and slow progress to much larger programs. As you make your way to these larger programs you run into some fundamental logic flaws (or design flaws). This book helps shed some very useful and en lighting information on these flaws. Be it you think it's a language flaw or design flaw in your programming. This book will give you some very useful tools to be used medium to large scale c++ programs. It is a most definitely on my recommendation of books to read for a C++ programmer."

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

#1 New York Times bestselling author Johanna Lindsey delivers a sparkling, passionate tale of an earl’s daughter who must convince a mysterious viscount to marry her and end his vendetta against her brother.

One duel could be considered a matter of honor, but three duels are attempted murder! With enlightened society outraged at such reckless behavior among young noblemen, the Prince Regent orders Robert Whitworth, the earl of Tamdon’s heir, and Lord Dominic Wolfe to end their dispute by allying their families through marriage. Whichever party refuses to comply will forfeit his lands and title.

Whitworth relishes the idea of sending his younger sister Brooke to his enemy’s remote estate. He knows the Wolf will reject her as a bride, thereby losing his wealth and status. The Wolf, however, is determined to scare away the Whitworth chit. With dueling no longer an available means of destroying the man he abhors, he will be satisfied to see him lose his lands and title. But he hadn’t expected his enemy’s sister to be so resourceful or resilient.

Brooke Whitworth has been dreaming of her first Season in London because she intends to win a husband who will take her far away from her unloving family. Instead, she is being sent to the Yorkshire moors to wed a mysterious nobleman whose family is cursed and who has thrice tried to kill her brother. But there’s no room in her heart for fear; this man is her means of escape. She will make him love her!

Hazme amarte / Make Me Love You Spanish Edition Johanna Lindsey Irene Saslavsky 9788490707142 Books Reviews

Get out of here!!

True Brit Celebrating The Comic Book Artists Of England George Khoury David Roach Jon B Cooke Eric Nolen Weathingon Books Reviews

  • "True Brit" gives Americans a long overdue examination of some of the luminaries of British comic book art. If you didn't know who Frank Bellamy, Syd Jordan, John M. Burns and Don Lawrence were before reading this book you'll certainly admire their elegant artwork when you read their respective profiles. I think the key difference between the American and English comic book form is that in the latter the superhero doesn't dominate the medium as it has in America. The result is a wide variety of styles and a wider range of material for English readers. "True Brit" is an excellent addition to any library.
  • There is one thing you can always be sure of with George Khoury. He KNOWS his subject of comics. Here it is 2013 and I'm only just now reading this book. The interviews with the cartoonists of my youth in Australia & London are here. Ron Embelton, Frank Bellamy (truely the best along with John M. Burns) are just wonderful reading. The art is well chosen and I liked the design of the book. You want to see some illustrative comic art? Then look no further and take a read down memory lane. Kinda like a Beatles tune set to PENNY LANE in pictures.
  • Pity that you can't get a book solely on the work of Ron Embleton...or can you?

  • This work accuses . It breaks like its musical counterpart - the "Silent Groove" radically with convention. The overstimulation of the everyday media is announced the fight. Simultaneously this book envolves a concept of emptiness, relaxation and reflection, which allows the individuum to come in accordance to itself and to come to terms with the circumstances.

  • I bought this book because a group of my FB friends had read it and were following the principles in it. They were so impressed with it that I decided to check it out. Very good book...glad I bought it.
  • Wow! The process shared in this book is transformational. It's amazing how we have been held back by the lies we believe.
I'm grateful for how this process has released me from those lies, and build my faith in myself and Christ.
  • This book was powerful. I have been taking the on line classes and am involved with training and this book helped to anchor me even more into Gods word and mission. Moments in this book I even broke down and cried because of the confirmations and the spirit of The Lord to bring all of us back to himself. Anyway, if you are one who is seeking freedom to be the person God made you to be then this book is a key to unlocking doors that seem shut.
  • Biblical and a great tool to have. Liebusting with the Holy Spirit gives freedom
  • I am reading Jonanthan's book as I am applying his principles of Lie Busting. This book is an excellent detailed account of how to set yourself and others free from more of the lies that you may believe and those of the your past generational bloodline that has you stuck in a rut. I highly recommend this book!!!
  • Wonderful
  • A must read for every believer!
  • Excellent book with excellent information to chop off all those shackles you feel are over your life.... And we all have them, mindsets, habits, generational family issues, illnesses.
A must read for everyone because we all love freedom!! Highly recommend LieBuster

Excerpt from History of Stephenson County, Illinois, Vol. 1 A Record of Its Settlement, Organization, and Three-Quarters of a Century of Progress

The first flag of a civilized people to wave over the prairies Of Illinois; was the flag Of France. The French explorations from the mouth of the St. Law rence, up that river, over the Great Lakes, over the portages, down the Illi nois, and on the waters of the Mississippi, have no rival in the history Of the world. From the discovery of the St. Lawrence in 1534 and the settlement of Champlain, in 1608, French love of romantic daring, determined patriotism-and religious zeal never flagged till the whole of the Mississippi valley was made known to the civilized world. The work of exploration was carried on to Lake Michigan. It was then taken up by these wonderful men Marquette, Joliet, Hennepin, Allouez, Tonti and La Salle. In birch bark canoes, they went up and'down the Wisconsin, Illinois, the Rock River and the Mississippi, trading with the Indians, preaching Christianity to them, establishing trading posts and planting here the flag of France. La Salle built Fort Crevecoeur near Peoria, in 1680, and in 1683, fort St. Louis, between Ottawa and La Salle. French settlements were established at Cahokia and at Kaskaskia. French settlers came from France and from New Orleans. In 1720, Fort Chartres was built on the Mississippi between Kaskaskia and Cahokia. In 1750 there were eleven hundred French in Illinois about Kas'kaskia and three hun dred negroes and sixty red slaves. The negro slaves were brought into Illi nois as a result of edicts by Louis XIII and Louis XIV. The officers in Illi nois' then were a commandant and a civil judge. There was no representative government.

The European wars between France and England spread to America. Eng lad won America at the battle of Quebec, in 1759, and Illinois and Stephenson County passed from France to England by the Treaty of Paris, 1763. The dream of a great French empire was gone forever and the French flag gave away the banner of Great Britain.

What did the rulers of the Soviet Union truly think about each other?  Piggy Foxy and the Sword of Revolution provides a window onto the soul of Bolshevism no other set of materials has ever offered.  Sketching on notebook pages, official letterheads, and the margins of draft documents, prominent Soviet leaders in the 1920s and 1930s amused themselves and their colleagues with drawings of one another. Nearly 200 of these informal sketches, only recently uncovered in secret Soviet files are reproduced here. Funny, original, spontaneous, sometimes vicious or grotesque, the drawings and their accompanying notes reveal the relationships and mindsets of the Bolshevik bosses at the time of Stalin’s rise to power with blazing immediacy.
The album’s editors select characteristic drawings by such prominent leaders as Nikolai Bukharin, who depicts himself as “piggy foxy,” Valery Mezhlauk, and Stalin himself, whose trademark blue pencil appears on several of the drawings. A number of sketches of unknown authorship are also included. The editors identify the political issues, events, and discussions that inspired the drawings, and they provide biographical information about the people who drew and were drawn. The book opens a rare window on Stalin’s inner circle, allowing us access to the powerful men who, despite living in a humorless epoch, developed a special humor of their own.

"Like other Annals of Communism books, Piggy Foxy and the Sword of Revolution is for the serious students of the history of Russian communism. It shows us the lighter side of the `comrades'; the kind of jests they used to play on each other, particularly in making caricatures. This book is a collection of these caricatures and portraits. It mostly describes the period before the Great Terror, before the iron regime of Stalin stifled all intellectual imagination. Most prominently it features the wit and art of Bukharin, the man who, according to Solzhenitsyn, was capable of stemming the bloody run of the Communists in Russia. Another prominent artist, not active in politics, is Alexander Vatlin.

As a student of Stalinist history, it came to me as a surprise that humor was still possible under the dictatorship of the proletariat. This book shows that even under extreme duress, human creativity breaks out in the most unexpected of places. While describing the underlying brutality of the Communist regime, these caricatures prove the basic premise of Communism wrong: it shows that social engineering is impossible; man can never be bound into ideologies.

The introduction by Simon Sebag Montefiore is very interesting and necessary for going through the portraits and caricatures.

This is not a book to be read in both literal and symbolic sense. The portraits cannot be leafed through at one go. One has to absorb the history underlying these portraits over a period of time, while studying other historical works and contemplating over the life of Communist Russia. Not a volume to be studied in isolation but very useful for those who are deep in the history of Russian communism."

What pushed Blunt, Burgess, Cairncross, Maclean and Philby into Soviet hands?

With access to recently released papers and other neglected documents, this sharp analysis of the intelligence world examines how and why these men and others betrayed their country and what this cost Britain and its allies.

Enemies Within is a new history of the influence of Moscow on Britain told through the stories of those who chose to spy for the Soviet Union. It also challenges entrenched assumptions about abused trust, corruption and Establishment cover-ups that began with the Cambridge Five and the disappearance of Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean on the night boat to Saint-Malo in 1951.

In a book that is as intellectually thrilling as it is entertaining and illuminating, Richard Davenport-Hines traces the bonds between individuals, networks and organisations over generations to offer a study of character, both individual and institutional. At its core lie the operative traits of boarding schools, the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the Intelligence Division, Foreign Office, MI5, MI6 and Moscow Centre.

Davenport-Hines tells many stories of espionage, counter-espionage and treachery. With its vast scope, ambition and scholarship, Enemies Within charts how the undermining of authority, the rejection of expertise and the suspicion of educational advantages began, and how these have transformed the social and political temper of modern Britain.

"Somewhat of a muddled telling of the history of spying, mostly by the Soviets over the last century and mostly within England. Muddled in the sense the narrative is sometimes hard to follow.

The author holds strong opinions, not all of which are supported by evidence. He definitely writes from an English point of view and is sympathetic to many of the spies and alleged spies, especially those entrapped by perceived sexual misdeeds (alcohol abuse was a much bigger problem). He is not warm to America.

While the Cambridge Spy Ring is the central part of this book, other lesser known episodes of spying are covered. Here the sensationalist actions of an irresponsible media, the overreaction by populist politicians, the mistaken actions of numerous "mole" hunters, the unfounded blame placed by critics on cultural and class elites, are all made part of Richard Davenport-Hines' uneven assessment.

As a small point, I was struck that this was the first book on Soviet espionage that I have read that did not give the middle name of the CIA's counter-intelligence chief, James Jesus Angleton. Here he is simply plain old (and crazy) James Angleton."

As a small point, I was struck that this was the first book on Soviet espionage that I have read that did not give the middle name of the CIA's counter-intelligence chief, James Jesus Angleton. Here he is simply plain old (and crazy) James Angleton.
  • Students of the efforts to undermine faith in America's electoral process and democratic institutions by Vladimir Putin and his pseudo-populist friends will find much to interest them in this impressive and provocative book. The author argues against the widespread belief that the so-called Cambridge spies (Burgess, Maclean, and Philby, et. al.) in the 'forties and 'fifties were upper class degenerates who operated and were protected within the shelter of an antiquated and hidebound Establishment. Instead, the author traces the treachery of these spies to the institutions within which they were raised and worked, schools and government agencies dominated, not by upper class bias, "but [by male] gender exclusivity that created the enabling conditions for espionage" in Britain's Foreign Office and intelligence services. The public exposure of these spies beginning in 1951 and the reaction of the British press to these traitors, Davenport-Hynes believes, launched a wave of anti-elite and anti-intellectual fervor that infects Britain to this day "The wrecking of the Establishment [by the Cambridge spies] was a gift to the Kremlin." (457) Food for thought for American readers at a time when many of our major institutions and policies are being challenged at the highest levels of government. The book is incredibly well-researched and the author has an unfailing eye for the right anecdote and telling quote. However, he often becomes prolix and too detailed do we really need to know that when the atomic spy Klaus Fuchs met his Soviet handler that she arrived at the rendezvous "on a bicycle with a wicker child's seat cushioned by a cheerful green pillow embellished with pictures of daisies?" (342) Finally, one error seems to have escaped the author's encyclopedic eye Peter Rhodes, an American who became a communist at Oxford University in the late 'thirties, is mistakenly identified as a Rhodes scholar at Oriel College (212 & 262) when he appears to have held a less exalted graduate fellowship at that college.
  • I went into Davenport-Hines’ Enemies Within Communists, Cambridge Spies, and the Making of Modern Britain with my eyes open. I had gotten halfway though his Gothic A History. I won’t go into that book’s issues, but I understood the possibility of like features. Mostly I was interested in the Cambridge Five. Specifically, Blunt and Philby. I imagined D-H’s mammoth work would provide more info than I probably wanted—after all, they’re even mentioned prominently in the subtitle. This suspicion proved true, but somewhat disappointing.

Davenport-Hines has a rather large premise. One that casts its shadow long. He states with a truthfulness I daren’t dispute that the England’s security services until very recently were almost entirely staffed in positions of authority by men. These men got along with each other just swell. They’d go off to the club, enjoy a few dozen snifters apiece, and mostly keep it quiet when a compatriot started aggressively quoting Marx or Lenin and attempted to uncouthly recruit them as the bill arrived. Because the office environment was composed almost entirely of males, a high premium was placed on the values of loyalty, discretion, and avoiding public embarrassment at all possible costs. This gender dominance according to D-H allowed those inclined spying for Russia within the Foreign Office, MI5 & MI6 to escape detection and even allowed them to continue their seditious trade after they were detected. Whenever a spy was discovered and halted, though, the male patriarchy typically attempted to avoid public scandal in the form of a trial. This blueprint of passive passivity worked sufficiently well until Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean decided to take an extended “holiday” to the Soviet Union. Had women been staffed in positions of prominence, almost certainly none of the recruitment, spying, and cover-ups would’ve proceeded as they had. Yes, I can say this is the first history book I’ve read where it felt that the MeToo movement provided more than a little inspiration for its across the board revisionism.

The problem with baldly asserting what men are “like”, then claiming that were women to fill more of their roles things would be different—because ostensibly they’re “unlike” their male counterparts—leads to, well, touchy issues. One might neatly jump from men are loyal, discrete, and non-confrontational, over to women are disloyal, indiscrete, and truculent. D-H clearly means that placing women in positions of influence and power from the 30s on would’ve changed the time-line as to how things ultimately unfolded; but this is a simple truism, not really an informative theory. The exclusion of women from almost all positions of power is a deep fault in itself. Attributing negative qualities to an entire gender often means attributing different negative qualities to the other as well. Another unfortunate feature of Enemies Within is D-H’s persistent debunking of past flabby explanations as to why some Brits spied for the communist cause. D-H writes repeatedly that upper classism had absolutely nothing to do with why the Martin Hari crowd decided to betray their country. To prove it, D-H goes through each spy’s parents’ employment history. Actually, he extends this to non-spies, as well. With the list of folk treated in this five hundred plus page work you’ll soon feel like your reading a nonstop resumé. Now, sure, I could point out that the Cambridge Five all went to University and that confers an inherent degree of prestige whether the person in question went to Eaton or not, or whether his dad cleaned toilets for a living. Sure, I could state in very bad faith that women actually outnumbered the men in the security services—albeit in mostly secretarial slots. Sure, I could point out that the Soviets had numerous female field officers and the “male” qualities of loyalty and discretion were as present in their actions on behalf of the Politburo as it could possibly wish. And, sure, I could gripe that the Big Five aren’t touched on significantly until almost two hundred pages in. But I can’t take away from D-H the incredible amount of information he provides to any reader of Enemies Within. Even if it in the end all buttresses an extremely faulty theory that isn’t really much of one to begin with.

BTW Once you do get to it, the stuff on Burgess, Philby, and Blunt are well worth the price of admission.

"I've received this book yesterday so the review is not on the recipes but on the book itself.
There is a wide range of recipes, well organized according to different categories and some black and white photos but what was an issue for me (which might not be for someone else) is that except for a short explanation at the begining of each chpter, there were, almost, no additional explanations on individual recipes or a story about it and no translation to english for the recipes name.
This might be an excellent book and I'm absolutely grateful for the efforts that went into it and am sure I will use it but I'm also sure, knowing myself, that I would have used it more if it was more inviting with stories that will connect me to the place and personal experiences of its authors."

The Vegan Boulangerie The best of traditional French baking egg and dairyfree Marianne Marianne JeanMichel JeanMichel 9781426926594 Books Reviews

  • What a beautiful book. Before I became a vegan, I used to bake many of the delicious breads and treats I found in this book! It's also lovely if you like to have "high tea" or even an informal tea party which I have been wanting to do, but I never found a cookbook which offered such lovely recipes. This book will be a joy to use! There is even a recipe for vegan croissants!
  • I just couldn't get these recipes to work well for me. Perhaps my fault and not the book's, but... I'm still not churning out delicious French pastries after reading this! -) I do appreciate the effort that went into the book and the innovative ideas, though. With some more experimentation, maybe?
  • As a fairly new vegan (almost a year) who loves to bake (with over 30 years experience under her belt), I was so excited to get this book. I immediately shopped for and made the Macarons de Nancy and the Moka Truffle Gateau.

I will often stray from a recipe if I think my experience in baking will produce a better product, but I followed these recipe to the letter so I could be assured that if it didn't turn out right, it wasn't because I didn't follow directions. What I produced, I didn't find appetizing or edible. The macarons were too tough and chewy and the tofu macaron filling was really unappetizing. I ended up chucking the tofu filling and grinding up the macarons to use as the bottom crust for a vegan cheesecake.

As for the gateau, it had a gummy, off-putting texture with a very coarse crumb -- not like the delicate fine crumbed texture I usually associate with french baking. Since I don't shy away from complicated recipes (these actually aren't complicated, just time consuming), I couldn't figure out how these two could go so wrong.

Also, while the bread recipes look inviting, most bread recipes could constitute as vegan or be veganized very easily (check out my new favorite bread book "Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day" -- it contains many recipes that are already vegan, or can be provided you use vegan "butter".)

The book is pretty and looks nice on the shelf, but I think I'll wait awhile before I attempt another recipe from that book (not to mention the expense of experimenting -- I paid $15 for the almond paste alone!) Since I only made 2 recipes, I gave it 3 stars, but if I based it on what I produced using this book, I'd only give it 2.
  • Arrived on time and just as described! Thank you!
  • I love this book. It's full of treats I have missed over the years and been unable to find good recipes for. The book is beautifully presented, easy to follow and once you have the basics of each technique they're easy to adapt/play with. Cant recommend enough.
  • I've received this book yesterday so the review is not on the recipes but on the book itself.
There is a wide range of recipes, well organized according to different categories and some black and white photos but what was an issue for me (which might not be for someone else) is that except for a short explanation at the begining of each chpter, there were, almost, no additional explanations on individual recipes or a story about it and no translation to english for the recipes name.

  • It is kind of obvious, I know, but some of the terms are French, and the measurements are metric. I have yet to make anything out of it, and that may say something, but I did enjoy perusing through it, and will likely make something eventually. It is unlikely that it will sit on my counter and be used often, though.
  • If you like French baking, you'll love it.
If you can't eat milk or butter, eggs or other animal products, because you have an allergy or you're a vegan/vegetarian, you'll love it.
If both (my case), YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK!

Too often "baking without milk or eggs" means just that without. Sure there's plenty of great vegan cookbooks out there, but when it comes to cakes and biscuits they all tend to be low-fat, low-sugar...low-fun.
Now The Vegan Boulangerie does have loads of healthy recipes, especially in the bread section (the carrot or pepper breads are just amazing). A lot of the savoury pastries use seasonal vegetables or nuts.
But if you really want to surprise those that are used to seeing you snack on dry biscuits and raw fruit bars, try the cakes and other sweet things here. There's a good reason why a lot of people consider French food to be the best in the world, with deliciously decadent names like quiche lorraine, profiterolles, croissants and éclairs! This book does a good job re-creating all the famous dishes as well as the less-known -but just as mouth-watering- kouign amann from Britanny or the palmier French kids grab after school. In fact forget about vegan there aren't a lot of books dedicated to French baking, so even for non-vegans this book is a great chance to discover some of France's best-known recipes.

A lot of the recipes are based on a few basic doughs you can make (or buy) your puff pastry and then go on to make croissants, pain au chocolat, paté en croute and more. On a personal note, I've tried a lot of egg-free methods for choux pastry, but none has ever come close to the one given here. It uses potatoes (!) and a slow baking process, and the resulting puffs are simply wonderful, so kudos to the authors )
There's not an awful lot of pictures, and they're in black and white, but the introduction to each section gives a quick description of some of the recipes. And it's probably the most fun just pick a recipe whose name inspires you (though you may have a hard time saying flammenkuche or bugne de Lyon!) and surprise everyone!
Recipes are grouped in 6 sections bread; biscuits; basic doughs/pastry that are used for more complex recipes; after-school snacks; savoury recipes; and desserts. The steps are numbered and quite clear, and quantities are in both metric and imperial. The authors are French and very clearly know what they're writing about.

To anyone looking for a typically French alternative to the standard "egg-free/dairy-free baking" fare bon appétit with this book!

"I got this book and loved the beautiful words and lovely illustrations. My 16 month old nursling loves this book as well and usually ends up nursing herself by the end of it. When I finish the book she signs for "more" which is her way of asking me to read it again and again. One time I had to of read it at least 12 times in a row!!! I have patience to read it multiple times like that, but also this book is truly that lovely and easy to deal with reading over and over and over as an adult. I highly recommend it for mothers nursing beyond infancy, as well as mothers expecting a new baby with older siblings.
The facts are overflowing with animal names (Platypus babies are called puggles. did not know that!) and interesting nursing facts (Foals nurse every thirty minutes!) so it is an amazing teaching tool in that way. Plus, it shows how biologically normal breastfeeding is and a diverse selection of mothers (Not just white women.)
Last but not least, there are two pages that have a daddy in it (One is a cosleeping picture with mama nursing and daddy sleeping next to her. The other is a daddy holding his son as they watch a mama hamster nursing her babies.) which is always a cute touch and my daughter (A total daddy's girl) points out the daddy every time because it is special to her and she enjoys books with daddies too.

All in all a wonderful book and I highly recommend it."

Mama Milk/Mama Me Alimenta Spanish Edition Michael Elsohn Ross Ashley Wolff 9781582462455 Books Reviews

  • Beautifully illustrated in the style of the cover image of the calico cat, each page features a unique mammal mama with her nurslings. The first page has a human mama nursing her baby in bed, papa sleeping beside them, as the sun dawns through the window. "Cuddle little baby warm and tight, Mama's going to feed you day and night," it reads, with its accompanying Spanish translation. The book names each animal and their young in English and Spanish. Each page contains a short rhyming line or couplet - perfect for any age! Mammals featured are seal, pig, horse, monkey, elephant, bat, otter, platypus, kangaroo, armadillo, coyote, whale, dolphin, bear, raccoon, hamster, cat, and human. Included are everyday life illustrations of mothers nursing or feeding their babies at the park, a father with his son and their hamsters, a mother wearing her baby in a sling, and a breastfeeding mama snoozing in a chair with her infant. On the last two pages are the thumbnail images from each page with interesting facts about each, such as, "kangaroo milk is pink." The book contains 23 pages of text.

I got this book in paperback together with the Nursing Nina Cat for my two-year old nursling on her 2nd birthday, and I am very pleased. She is fascinated with baby animals, especially cats. The combination gift was perfect, as she played with the Nina Cat and kittens while I read to her. She asked me to read it over and over again and thoroughly soaked up the information and pictures of the baby animals. My older daughter (age 8), who was also nursed as a baby, also enjoyed reading this book and learning about the different baby animals. She is learning Spanish.

My ten-year old son notes it is a good book to teach small children about breastfeeding in a sweet and interesting way. This book can also be a source of inspiration and affirmation to mothers and fathers who choose to offer this amazing gift of love to their children.

Another book that would compliment this combination nicely is, "I Love You As Much," by Laura Krauss Melmed.
  • Adorable book. The pictures are sweet, and the words for the story have a nice rhyming rhythm. I think my daughter (who is 2 and still breastfeeds) will enjoy it (it's a gift and we haven't given it to her yet). There are few enough words per page to keep the attention of a younger child. The facts about the animals are in the back of the book, not integrated into the story, so a child likely wouldn't bother reading those much (or paying attention to them) until they're a bit bigger. I got the hardcover book and while the pages are normal book paper (and therefore are unlikely to hold up any better than any other non-board book), the cover is nice and solid. I definitely recommend this book to others who have breastfeeding toddlers or who want to normalize breastfeeding.
  • I love it and my daughter enjoys reading it before bed. I love that it so subtly shows nursing as common, unremarkable. I have other children's books about breastfeeding that read like you're telling the child what breastfeeding is or trying too hard to tell the reader that it's "normal". That may be good for an older sibling who isn't familiar with it or other family or friends who want to explain it to their children, I don't know. But my toddler is familiar with all types of eating including breastfeeding, bottle feeding, solids, and cups. This is great for my daughter because it shows other animals and their babies and what they are all called, they just happen to be eating too.
  • I got this book and loved the beautiful words and lovely illustrations. My 16 month old nursling loves this book as well and usually ends up nursing herself by the end of it. • This is a super cute book, but it's unfortunate that it's not a board book. The age group that this is suited for really needs it to be a board book. By the time my daughter is old enough to not rip paper pages, she won't be nursing anymore, and this book won't appeal to her as much. I bought it along with the Nina Nursing Cat available on . It's a stuffed cat with three kittens that nurse from their mama (attached with magnets in the mama cat's nipples and the kittens' mouths). It's so sweet and looks almost exactly like the cover of this book- they should be sold together, really. Anyway, I thought I'd read this book as she held her kittens, but because this isn't a board book I hardly ever get it out for her to see. Such a shame.
  • I really was looking forward to enjoying this book. I bought it mostly for the Spanish translation. Buyer beware! If you want the bilingual version, the hardback is only in English!!! Apparently the board book and paper back are bilingual. Going to give this one too a friend and order the bilingual one again for me and my son.

Otherwise, love the drawings and message. Very cute and perfect for nursing families.

Imagine suddenly leaving a comfortable and successful job in exchange for a year of living and working in Italy. You book a flight with no definite idea of where you’ll live or work, no visa and no work permit. Further imagine taking your wife and two distinctly unenthusiastic teen daughters with you. Your colleagues begin to doubt your mental balance, and you can’t blame them. Yet somehow this family learned to work, study, speak, shop and survive in a foreign land while stumbling their way through the delicious process of learning to live like Italians—all ‟without papers.” Along the way, the author impersonates an Italian cousin, gets his family lost innumerable times and meets his own personal version of the godfather—the man who hired him and gave him an apartment. The teen daughters struggle to find themselves while attending school by day and exploring young adult nightclubs into the early morning hours—while family members fight to work out their differences. In the tradition of Under the Tuscan Sun and Italian Neighbors, the travel memoir An American Family in Italy will appeal to families of all ages seeking adventure, challenge, a fresh start or a chance to embrace their inner Italian.

"While having read thousands of books, I must admit this is my first book review. I must give high marks to the aspiring author Paulo who paints a clear and very readable picture of his twentieth century familia’s “reverse immigration” back to our Grandparents’ old country. It must have been difficult for our Grandparents 100 years ago to travel here to the USA with assorted language, customs, and travel problems; however Mr. Spadoni’s sensitive and vivid recall of their year “abroad” highlights what it must have been like in reverse citing some of the hilarity and pitfalls of their “return to the old country.” I read it straight through, in public, with some onlookers shaking their heads when I would subconsciously mutter the words “sprezzatura” “la bella” or “passeggiata” while shaking my hand, thumb and fingers pressed together! Especially found the dangerous word confusion of penne/pene and anno/ano extremely educational as I am one that loves trying to use foreign terms without any formal training. If you like to learn new words you will love the Italian word interjections. Good writing! "I feel like I had been there with the author and family," -El viajero vicario"

An American Family in Italy Living La Dolce Vita without Permission Paul Spadoni 9781521588178 Books Reviews

  • Paul Spadoni,Author of an American family in Italy, takes us on much more than a memoir of his family's attempt of moving to Italy to live La Dolce Vita...without legal permission! 😯He shares the ups and downs of adjusting to an ancient country, exposes the bureaucracy and frustrations one might find themselves in when visiting Italy for an extended period of time. His love for the language, knowledge of the people and history, as well as his delightful wit will have you longing for your own adventures abroad! A must read for any lover of Italy and Italian Americans wanting a lighthearted read about the Old Country!
  • This is such a heartwarming read. I found that the author struck the right balance between specificity and brevity. I found myself genuinely caught up in the suspense of every escapade, from bus ticket snafus to procuring the ever-elusive visa. Spadoni is able to inject his vignettes with a good-natured breeziness that keeps the pace going quite nicely. The stories themselves are vivid and genuine. There's a world of difference between simply going somewhere as a tourist and actually making that somewhere your new world, and the author warmly brings you into each scene as he and his family attempt just that. I also think readers who plan to travel with children, particularly teenagers, will enjoy reading about the special travails the author and his wife navigate, and perhaps even be inspired by their sensitive approach. If you're feeling at all cynical about your workaday, escape into this sincere, sweet tale and realize the best things in life really are the simple things -- good food, friends, and family.
  • I don't like to travel so I was hesitant to read a book like this. I am glad I did as the author shared his experiences in a fun and educational way. His experiences with Italian bureaucracy were interesting. The parts about his two daughters held my attention. I am the father of daughters and I wondered how they would have reacted. The author is proud of his Italian heritage and it showed. He made me understand a different country, and I appreciate it. He wrote a fine book!
  • Through reading this book, not only did I learn about someone I knew previously, but walked with him and his family through their adventures. I learned about a different culture, laughed at their escapades, and was encouraged to do something similar in the country of my roots...something I've always wanted to do as well. The reason it didn't get 5 stars was some of the chapters had too many and scattered thoughts & events happening at once. I would recommend this To anyone who wants a fun read, or who's interested in life outside the great US of A. It's a quick, light, and enjoyable read.

  • One of the joys in my life is traveling, but I also love to sit back and be entertained with travel stories from other people. Reading An American Family in Italy was just that - a chance to sit back, crack open a cold beer and let the words of Paul Spadoni take you away on an exciting and terrifying journey. If you're a father with the hope of raising a child to one day become a traveler and not just a tourist you will be inspired by this book. It's an unforgettable story about an introvert chasing a dream and hoping his family won't hate him for it.
  • Paul Spadoni gives us an intimate look into the lives of a family that, literally, make a bold move (both willingly and reluctantly) to the land of Paul's ancestors. With his wife's loving encouragement and his daughters fighting them tooth and nail, Paul finds a way to make a dream that he had come true. The tale of their adventure, along with the lessons they learned about themselves, is woven into a wonderful mission of love and respect, not only for the Old Country and those that came before, but for each other.
  • This was a fun and fast read, that gave me some good insight into a few things I'll use this summer while taking my teen Girl Scout troop to Italy.

I loved the personal, historical and cultural points throughout, as well as the humorous bits.

Full disclosure, Mr. Spadoni was my journalism teacher in high school, so it was fun to catch up on his adventures since then. Of course that's also why I didn't hesitate to buy it... I knew it would be a great read!
